Day 7 – 이천 십이 년 구월 이십구 일 [토요일 ] 2012 September 29 [Saturday]

Part 3 >> Gwanghwamun and Cheonggyecheon

Samcheongdong was sandwiched between Gwanghwamun and Cheongwadae. Cheongwadae (청와대 or Hanja 靑瓦臺), the Blue House, is the presidential residence. According to Korea Travel Guide and some websites, there are tours conducted within Cheongwadae but reservations must be made 3 weeks in advance via online application [http://english.president.go.kr/tours/cwd_tours/cwd_tours.php]. However, I think the 60 minutes tour are only conducted in Korean and there are no interpretation services provided and individual tour guides are not available. Unless you are very proficient in Korean (unlike me), you would not  be able to understand / appreciate the tour. As side entrance to Cheongwadae is beside Samcheongdong, there are military guards on duties, but I did not take photos of them on duties cos not sure if it is permitted… haha, I am such a coward… *Think too much perhaps*Studying the map again, realised that Cheonggyecheon (청계천 or Hanja 清溪川) was located within walking distance from Insadong, so I backtracked towards Jonggak Subway Station. Jongno Tower was at Exit No.3 of Jonggak Subway Station, walking pass Jongno Tower, crossing Gwanggyo, you would find the staircase to walk down and walk along Cheonggyecheon.

Reached Cheongyecheon in the evening, as the day was still bright, I went down to walk along the stream towards Dongdaemun (half the distance of the entire stream). There are 22 bridges over Cheonggyecheon, near to Dongdaemun was bridge no. 15 known as Malgeunnaedari. As day turns dark rather fast, I could only turn back at bridge no. 8 Seungyo before it got too dark. Tonight also marked the last night I stayed in Seoul Tower Ville, I would be shifting to Namsan Guesthouse 3 when Julie arrived tomorrow morning. Although there was daily uphill walk from Myeongdong to get back to Seoul Tower Ville, I had enjoyed staying in the very comfortable room, excluding the inconsiderate neighbours…

Day 7 – 이천 십이 년 구월 이십구 일 [토요일 ] 2012 September 29 [Saturday]

Part 2 >> Samcheongdong and Bukchon
Finished my Insadong walk, verified with the Tourist Booth on the right direction to walk towards Samcheongdong and Bukchon. At the end of Insadong, crossed the ‘huge’ junction, you would see a long lane that leads you towards Samcheongdong…

Insadong, Samcheongdong and Bukchon made me feel the tradition are keeping up with the modernization… It was not left behind.

Walking around Samcheongdong / Bukchon, there is no need to follow any walking course… I didn’t… whenever, you felt you are lost, you would be rewarded with surprised finds… When I thought I had enough of Bukchon, I found these steps that leads down to Samcheongdong. At the end of these steps, I saw a PINK building on my right side…. Hello Kitty Cafe! I started to take photos and decided to have my lunch in there. Ordered a waffle and expresso, I liked the expresso as it was strong while the waffle did not match my expectation, maybe I had high expectation?! A waffle might had cost much less if not purchased from Hello Kitty Cafe. (T_T)lll

After resting in Hello Kitty Cafe, continue my walking tour. Had actually wanted to walk towards Anguk Subway Station but was attracted by the sounds and walked towards Gwanghwamun instead…

Day 7 – 이천 십이 년 구월 이십구 일 [토요일 ] 2012 September 29 [Saturday]

Part 1  >> 인사동 Insadong 仁寺洞街

Breakfast was simple.*Forgot to mention that Seoul Tower Ville does not provide breakfast…

As yesterday was caught in the rain and couldn’t enjoyed Insadong, I was back for a second visit. Although it was a weekend (and only 1 day difference), it was soooooo  quiet. Many Koreans had gone back to their hometown or their parents’ hometown to prepare for Chuseok [추석] on 30 September 2012. Chuseok is a 3-days public holiday in Korea although most of other Asian countries such as Singapore and Malaysia did not classified it as public holiday. Chuseok is known as Mid-Autumn Festival [中秋節] in Singapore and Malaysia, we celebrated by having mooncakes (traditional one are baked with lotus paste filling) with chinese tea with families and friends while children carried lanterns…

I liked the alleys in Insadong. Although quite a lot of the shops in these alleys were closed due to Chuseok, I enjoyed the opportunity to walk these alleys quietly. Enjoyed the walk so much that I decided to extend the walk to explore Samcheongdong and Bukchon. If you loved walking in the city, I think you would enjoyed this route too…

Day 6 – 이천 십이 년 구월 이십팔 일 [목요일] 2012 September 28 [Friday]

Woke up with the intention to go Nami Island and Petit France but with a call to MM [Tour guide turned friend], was told that Seoul would experience rain this afternoon. Took his suggestion and went to Insadong instead. Alighted at Jonggak Station (Line 1 Exit 5) and did a short walk to Insadong [인사동 / 仁寺洞].

Bought a snack ₩1,000 made of sweet potato flour with something sweet as fillings at the starting point of my Insadong walk. For so many days in Korea, I had not doing any shopping except spending money on food and transportation, but I just couldn’t stop myself from shopping in Insadong…

After getting 8 pairs of ear-rings @ ₩1,000 each pairs, a hair-band and a S3 cover, I proceed on, and it really started to rain…and I took shelter in Samziegil where I befriended ZZ, another fellow traveler. She came Korea for conference in Daegu and came to Seoul to shop before returning. In term of shopping, I think she was more prepared than me. (^_^)

Since it was raining, I asked her if she has other places to explore, and she mentioned she need to go Kwangjang Market [광장시장] (Jongno 5-ga Station) to get silk cloth, Namdaemun [남대문 / 南大門] for brooches and then proceed to MyeongDong to meet up with her friends. I asked to tag along and she agreed. We spent some time wandering around Kwangjang, trying to find a shop no. 187 which was supposed to be selling silk at very reasonable prices. Kwangjang also have many stalls selling different goods, both edible and daily goods. When we found the shop, it was a shop selling buttons… (T_T)lll Still, Zarina was able to get her silk after browsing more shops. Then we took another train to Namdaemun for brooches hunting. It was really an eye-opener for me to see so many stalls side by side selling huge variety of accessories (necklaces / ear-rings / brooches etc). Was still raining but had great fun before heading back to MyeongDong for short rest while Zarina went off to meet her friends.

Went out again in the evening to meet MM for dinner in Yangjae (part of Gangnam area). Arranged with him to meet up again when YSL arrived on Sunday 30 September 2012 morning.

Day 5 – 이천 십이 년 구월 이십칠 일 [목요일] 2012 September 27 [Thursday]

생일축하합니다! To myself, of course!

Officially decided to take it super super easy today. (^_^)

Only get out to travel to Samgakji Kooridoor to settle payment for DMZ tour reserved on Saturday 6 October 2012. Bought snack from Samgakji Station as I passed by because the aromatic smell was too irresistible.

Back to MyeongDong, did a big loop, no sales person in MyeongDong ‘pestered’ me to buy things… Guess I really don’t look / dress like a shopper… Tiger Balm was sold in MyeongDong for ₩6,000 a bottle! Back to Seoul Tower Ville to rest further from too much walking in Gyeongju. I got to watch ‘Running Man’ in HD!

大韓民國 in September / October 2012 – Day 4

Day 4 – 이천 십이 년 구월 이십육 일 [수요일] 2012 September 26 [Wednesday]

Woke up the earliest today… Bid farewell to the 2 american couples, took the suggestion from Choo, Sa Rang Chae’s owner and walked to Gyeongju National Museum for a morning visit before catching the afternoon bus to Seoul.

Walking to the museum leads me to pass Wolseong Moat and Gyerim Forest before reaching the museum. Free Admission to the museum. As I only had less than half a day, I could not covered the entire museum > only managed to cover the special exhibition hall and the main hall. *Museum Volunteers are on ‘duty’ on Wednesdays in the main hall. I had the opportunity to meet one where I was blessed with more indepth knowledge of the exhibits. Non-flash photography are allowed in this museum too. Not going to upload the countless photos taken in the special exhibition hall and main hall because I believe a actual visit would do more justice to the museum. I would definitely be back to cover the museum, maybe even allocate an entire day for it.

Rushing back from the museum around 1110hrs to check out of Sa Rang Chae, I found I have some time to enjoy my lunch (walking distance from Sa Rang Chae too) before leaving collecting my luggage, took a cab from Sa Rang Chae to the Express Bus Terminal ₩2,200 to catch my bus.

The bus ride was smooth and uneventful, and I reached Seoul around 1705hrs. Took some time to decide on what line to take to get myself to Myeongdong, final decision was taking line 9 and transfer to line 4. Can’t seem to locate a single trip ticket machine, so with a local’s help, bought my T-money pass ₩5,000 and top-up ₩5,000 for my initial travel. Reached Myeongdong at 1819hrs and called Mr. Ko of Seoul Tower Ville [http://www.seoultowerville.com/english.html] for free pick up from Sejong Hotel (Exit 10 of MyeongDong). The difference between Gyeongju and Seoul was that accommodation in Seoul required immediate payment before you see / check-in the room. Dinner was in a Japanese Restaurant, right next to Prince Hotel, before returning back to Seoul Tower Ville to enjoy the TV program in the room. The room was superb but can’t said much about the fellow travellers… returning back to their room past midnight, talking real loud, slamming the door each time they opened / closed. Can’t understand why their manners and common sense were left at home when they travelled. Tomorrow will be better?!

Day 3 – 이천 십이 년 구월 이십오 일 [화요일] 2012 September 25 [Tuesday]

Third day in Gyeongju. Breakfast was 2 slices of french toast with coffee made in the kitchen and enjoyed in Sa Rang Chae’s courtyard. Should have consumed more, had I known that it was a super long walk to and fro Namsan…

Original intention was to take bus to the starting point of Namsan (aka. SamNeung), but as the bus was not in sight when I reached the bus-stop and it was wonderful weather, cool and sunny, I decided to walk towards the starting point. Views were rewarding along the simple long walk although SamNeung is only 3 to 4 bus-stops away from Sa Rang Chae.

I think the beauty of walking is discovering new things along the way when you can keep your eyes / ears opened to new things. (^_^) At least, lots of mini stops and a detour to Poseokjeong [Admission Ticket is ₩500] and Royal Tomb of King Jima.

I finally reached the recommended starting point of my hike, SamNeung around 1140hrs. Didn’t see any eateries nearby that I could pack my lunch for ascending… If you are keen to do this hike, I could recommend you to pack a simple lunch to enjoy at the peak of Namsam [Geumobong]. The ascent was easy to navigate as signs were clearly marked. There was a registration counter for hikers to leave their names before ascending but the instructions and columns are all in Korean, so I didn’t register my name with them. Afterthought > might be good to register with them for safety reason…

The hike was fine till I passed Geumobong and went for a toilet break. Saw the sign to Yangjang Village, walking towards it, clearing the three ‘short’ ropes [used to pull yourself down safely], with confirmation from a high school principal in Suwon who was doing his own trek, but along the descending, somehow the directional signs disappeared and doubts started forming… I was LOST in the mountain!!! As I could not hear any other sounds of hikers, I backtracked up the way I had descended. Am really relieved to see a group of Korean University Students. They were really sweet! There were 6 of them, 5 of them went ahead while 1 paced me and we conversed in simple English and Japanese > he was much more comfortable to converse in Japanese as he had stayed in Japan for few months for his industrial attachment. The 5 who were ahead of us would make regular stops and even offered me water. Was told that they couldn’t converse in English so they speed ahead to avoid talking to me.  (@_@)lll This group of students were from Seoul and they rented an apartment in Gyeongju with intention to hike Namsam. They would be back to hike another side of Namsam the next day! We finished the descend around 1630hrs. I am really thankful for their help, can’t think what would happened if I didn’t found them, but I totally forget to take photos with them and didn’t even asked for their names.

Was really hungry and tired, so am really happy to see Bus No. 500 [Bus fare ₩1,200] arrived at the bus-stop at 1635hrs. Took the bus back to Sa Rang Chae and went back to the same eatery where I had my kimbab the day before, ordered Ramyeon (라면) for my Tunch and treated myself to a free instant coffee from the eatery, before heading back to Sa Rang Chae to rest for the day. I think I would still want to do another hike in Namsam but this time, I would definitely be more prepared, and most probably, would try to get someone else to go with me. Back in the guesthouse, David, an retiree american, treated me to their rice wine bought in Seoul and Italian White Wine which they brought all the way from USA. The 4 of them were enjoying long holiday, they had been in Seoul for the past week, leaving for Busan the next day while their wives will be flying off to Beijing via Busan airport, while they stayed on in Busan for few more days before joining their wives in Beijing and flew back to US together. Envied their willingness to try new things / new places at their age and at the same time, taking time to enjoy life. I was also able to further introduced the same eatery to an Israelis couple, as they had just arrived in Sa Rang Chae and were trying to settle their dinner. Tomorrow will be my last day in Gyeongju before taking the express bus in the afternoon to Seoul…

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

Just remember that I had forgot to mention… Upon my arrival in Sa Rang Chae on 23 September night, the 2 girls (Candy & Choco) were quick to welcome me, while Choo immediately show me my room and orientate me with the common area. They didn’t ask for my payment at all. In fact, I had to ‘sort of’ remind them that ‘tonight is my last night staying in Sa Rang Chae, can I do my payment now?’ (^_^)

I think their first priority is to make all their guests feels homely in their guesthouse, afterall Sa Rang Chae was a 120 years old house, and just converted to be a guesthouse for approx. 14 years. Why I said that?! Because there was this Australian girl who arrived / checked in this morning, she went out to explore Gyeongju and came back in the late afternoon and checked out, we chatted abit and she told me she found another wonderful place to stay (didn’t mention where though) instead. Personally, I am glad that she is able to find another wonderful accommodation but on the other hand, I feel that Sa Rang Chae is at an disadvantage, they never asked for deposit, and they also didn’t ask the girl to pay any compensation (the room is now empty when it could have rented out to another guest). Anyway, I really enjoyed staying in Sa Rang Chae.

Day 2 – 이천 십이 년 구월 이십사 일 [월요일] 2012 September 24 [Monday]

Today’s highlight was Yang Dong Folk Village [양동민속마을]. Many blog writers wrote that many buses take you to Yang Dong, but you need to do a 1.2km walk to the entrance… The bus drivers think otherwise… I was fortunate that the staff in bus terminal and the bus drivers suggested me to take Bus 203 from a bus-stop beside the Bus Terminal. This bus took you right to the entrance of the village. It is the same bus-stop to wait / take the same bus nos. back to Gyeongju City. Din have to wait long for the bus as it arrived at 1034hrs. *If you have T-money Pass, you can use it to take the bus too. It was expanded out of Seoul recently… The bus fare costs ₩1,500 in cash (might cost slightly less if using T-money), and I reached the village around 1115hrs.

Went to the tourist booth to get the map of Yang Dong and their recommended must-visit houses. According to the staff at tourist booth, you can complete the village tour in 2 to 3 hours.

Lunch was cold noodle ₩5,000 (S$5.60) within the village. Had intended to try Kalguksu Knife-Cut Noodle Soup with its homegrown tojong chicken as I had found out from another blog that this village is well-known for it, but couldn’t locate the restaurant serving it. Also because it was a Monday, I think the villagers were out for work and it was relatively quiet with the exception of the tourists. According to the lady tending to the restaurant where I had my lunch… youngsters are leaving this village and population are dropping… Ended my visit and took the same bus at 1345hrs back to Gyeongju, the return trip costs ₩1,200, this bus also bring you to Shin-Gyeongju where you can take KTX. Many info of Yang Dong can be viewed on the web but I think http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yangdong_Folk_Village offered a nice overview.

Was back in Gyeongju in late afternoon, alighted around Jungang Market and walked towards Sa Rang Chae. Bought my ticket to Daereungwon ₩1,500, entered from the side entrance and exited via the main entrance. Cheonmachong, probably a tomb of a Shilla King, was opened for visit, you get to see several artifacts displayed within the tomb but no photos to be taken. You get to see families bringing their youngsters to visit Daereungwon and the staff keeping the park tidy and clean. You might get to see the magpie, like I did, a bird that is symbol of an auspicious messenger in Korea. Traditional Korean music were played in the background too.

After walking around Daereungwon, weather was so hot that I got myself a ice-cream ₩1,000 before continuing my walking tour.. Did walk to Cheomseongdae but did not pay the entrance fee ₩600 to visit because it was smaller than what I had expected. In fact, a lot of tourists were like me, viewed Cheomseongdae from outside. Had bought a bottle of Banana Milk and a 1.5l of Plum Juice from a convenience store located just beside Daereungwon Main Entrance, but I think was overpriced due to its location as I paid ₩5,100 for 2 items (@_@). The banana milk generally costs ₩1,200… Settled my dinner at a small eatery located about 3 minutes from Sa Rang Chae. End of my walking tour for today and tomorrow continue…

Day 1 – 이천 십이 년 구월 이십삼 일 [일요일] 2012 September 23 [Sunday]

D7506 touched down in 仁川國際機場 인천국제공항 Incheon International Airport at 0825hrs but still not able to catch the earliest connecting bus at 0850hrs to Gyeongju [경주]. Was ‘stuck’ in the airport till the next bus departing at 1340hrs. Such long interval (T_T)lll

Blessing in disguise after all! Was kept entertained for a while when groups of fans arrived, they ran from 1 gate to another. Totally professional fans! Disciplined, keeping distance from the stars when they appeared, yet still able to show their support to the stars. They even brought foldable stools to sit and wait or to stand taller for better visibility.

As there were no free wifi and you have to pay for the internet booth, there was really nothing much I could do, except people watching… Went on to have my lunch before boarding the bus at 1335hrs. The bus pull off the boarding gate punctually. Love their transportation network! Onboard the bus were locals going to Pohang.

Reached Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal around 1815hrs. After orientating myself with the map provided by Sa Rang Chae, I started walking towards my first guesthouse. Did try to ask the locals for confirmation that I was walking towards the right direction but they didn’t know Tumuli Park. The locals know it as Daereungwon. Eventually, reached Sa Rang Chae [http://www.kjstay.com/content_eng/iboard.cgi] around 1900hrs although it was supposed to be a 15minutes walk from the bus terminal. If you are travelling with luggage instead of backpacks, personally I would recommend taking a taxi.

Totally tired, although time was mostly spent in the airport and on the bus. Dinner was simple, delivered to Sa Rang Chae > Noodle with Seafood Soup ₩4,500 (S$5.02).

Preparation for this trip started since last year-end when saw the air-ticket deal offered by AirAsia. Booked the air-ticket in January 2012 for a trip in end September (^_^). Lots of research done before deciding to concentrate on Gyeongju, Jeonju and Seoul. Let the trip begin!

The Day – 이천 십이 년 구월 십이 일 [토요일] 2012 September 22 [Saturday]

As it was a night flight, transit in Malaysia Kuala Lumpur, there were time to do last minute packing and relaxing.  Finally took a cab to airport around 1700hrs… Did the necessary check-in. This is 1 of the rare time where I actually have time to explore the check-in area of Changi Airport before boarding my flight.

Flight AK718 landed rather smoothly at KLCC. Dinner was

Boarded the next leg D7506 closed to 0000hrs. Time to catch some Zzzzz before starting a new day in a new country.
